I was playing at the park with my son the other day when I saw another young boy fall from the monkey bars and instantly start screaming for his mother. As the boy’s shrill screams rang throughout the park, I see his father saunter over and brush the woodchips from his bleeding knees, then wipe the tears from his eyes with his thumb. The father looks his son in the eyes with a smile on his face and his son begins to smile back through his tear soaked eyes when I overhear his dad ask him, “Why do we fall down, Johnny?” and his boy meekly replies, “So we can learn to pick ourselves up.” Together they laugh and walk hand in hand towards the car where the dad had disinfecting wipes and a big square bandage for his son’s scraped knee.
